WATERCOLOURS, ACRYLICS & DRAWINGS

THE OPEN LIGHT STONE CAIRNS SERIES
The word Cairn comes originally from the Scottish Gaelic:
Càrn and can be traced back to prehistoric times and many different cultures. Essentially man-made piles, they can range from a small mound of pebbles to a monumental size edifice. They have been used for a number of different purposes including as landmarks,
burial indicators, and personal votive offerings.

My Pebble Cairns are an ongoing series, produced generally in watercolour, but also acrylic. I use traditional elements of size, shape, colour and texture to explore an inherent stillness and spatial hierarchy. My aim also is to express something of abandonment and suspended time before an inevitable collapse.
Despite implying a temporary existence, the stillness and delicate state of balance serve as elements for contemplation, allowing a hiatus in the mind’s busyness. Gesture and posture are suggested in their forms as is the possibility for metaphor.
